This solution is compatible with most Spanet, Balboa, Gecko Aeware, Joyonway and other modern spa control systems, meaning you get simple touchpad control without extra switches or controllers.

Converting or Adding a Gas Heater to a Portable Spa

Most portable spas are heated by built in electric elements, with the addition of a small heat pump in some cases. While effective, electric heating can be slow and expensive to run, particularly in colder months or when heating larger volumes of water. Many spa owners are now looking at gas heaters as an upgrade or addition thanks to their unmatched speed, reliability, and efficiency.

Why Add a Gas Heater

  • Fastest Heating Available: Gas is by far the quickest way to heat a spa, reaching your desired temperature much faster than electric heaters or heat pumps.
  • Consistent Output: Gas heaters deliver their rated kilowatt output in all conditions, unlike heat pumps that lose capacity in cold weather.
  • Lower Running Costs: Depending on gas prices in your area, gas heaters are often more cost effective to run than electricity.

How a Gas Heater Works with a Spa

  1. Plumbing Connection

    • Water is diverted from the spa, passed through the gas heater, then returned to the spa, generally using your existing spa circulation pump.
    • A bypass or flow control ensures correct water movement.

  2. Touchpad Integration

    • The heater can be connected to your spa’s control system.
    • You simply set the temperature on your spa touchpad, and the gas heater automatically starts or stops as needed.

  3. Gas Supply

    • A licensed gas fitter connects the unit to either natural gas or LPG bottled gas.
    • Gas heaters must always be installed outdoors with proper ventilation.

Gas Heater vs Heat Pump

While heat pumps are sometimes marketed as efficient spa heating solutions, their performance is directly tied to outside air temperature.

  • Gas Consistency: An AstralPool HX120 gas heater delivers around 24kW of heating output consistently regardless of the weather.
  • Heat Pump Drop Off: A 24kW heat pump may only provide 12kW or less on a cold day exactly when you want fast heating the most. Most spa dealers only offer a 4-9kW heat pump which may only put out 2-4kW of heat on a cold day! 
  • Speed Advantage: Gas heaters deliver maximum power instantly, making them the fastest and most reliable way to heat a spa.

Important Considerations

  • Professional Installation: Gas appliances must always be installed by licensed gas technicians to comply with Australian regulations.
  • Spa Compatibility: Most modern spas are compatible with external gas heaters, including systems from Spanet, Balboa, Gecko Aeware, and Joyonway. Older systems may require an upgrade.
  • Location: Ensure you have the space with safe clearances for installation.
