Important Note on Bromine Tablet Use in Spas
Bromine tablets are a fantastic and reliable sanitiser for spas and hot tubs. They provide consistent disinfection and are less affected by heat than chlorine, making them ideal for spa environments. However, like all chemical treatments, they must be used correctly to avoid damage to your spa and discomfort to bathers.
Signs of Excessive Bromine or Poor Water Balance:
- Strong or harsh chemical smell
- Fizzy, foamy, or cloudy water
- Red or irritated eyes
- Itchy or dry skin
- Low pH levels
- Brittle jet faces, headrests, or plastic fittings
- Discolouration or fading of spa surfaces
- Rust, pitting, or corrosion of metal components
- Deterioration of seals and o-rings
Left unchecked, high bromine levels and low pH can be corrosive to spa components, shorten the life of your equipment, and create an uncomfortable or even unsafe bathing environment.
Best Practice Tips:
- Test your spa water at least once a week (more often with regular use) using reliable, good-quality test strips
- Maintain bromine levels between 3–5 ppm (parts per million)
- Keep pH levels between 7.2–7.8 for optimal comfort and equipment protection
- Store tablets properly and never place them directly in the spa – always use a floating dispenser or built-in feeder
- Never "top up" without testing – guessing can easily result in overdosing
- Rinse off before using the spa to reduce contaminants and help the bromine work more efficiently
Avoid:
- Ignoring signs of water imbalance
- Using bromine in damaged or unsuitable dispensers
- Allowing tablets to sit directly on spa surfaces (this can cause bleaching or damage)
- Leaving the spa untreated for long periods – water left stagnant with high bromine can rapidly deteriorate internal components
With proper care and regular testing, bromine can provide clean, clear, and comfortable water — while protecting your spa investment.
Note: Dry chemicals are sold by weight, not volume. Due to differing densities of various chemicals, some containers may not appear 'full' when they are actually the correct weight.
