"Chemical-free" Spas & Hot Tubs

🚫 The Truth About “Chemical-Free” Spas

Why the Claim Is Misleading—and Potentially Dangerous

There is no such thing as a chemical-free spa. If a product or company tells you otherwise, it’s either misleading you—or putting your health at risk.

Warm spa water must be sanitised. Otherwise, it becomes the perfect environment for dangerous bacteria, biofilm, and waterborne illness.

❌ Why “Chemical-Free” Spas Don’t Exist

Even systems marketed as "chlorine-free", "mineral-only", or "natural" still use chemicals—just under different names. These include:

  • Salt systems – generate chlorine from sodium or magnesium chloride
  • Mineral sanitisers – supplement sanitation but do not replace it
  • Biguanide or hydrogen peroxide systems – alternative chemical sanitisers

Even water (Hâ‚‚O) is a chemical. Everything used to clean or balance spa water is a form of chemistry.

⚠️ What Happens Without Proper Sanitation?

Unbalanced or unsanitised spa water is dangerous. It can harbour pathogens such as:

  • Legionella pneumophila – causes Legionnaires’ disease
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa – causes hot tub rash and ear infections
  • E. coli & fecal coliforms – cause gastrointestinal illness
  • Cryptosporidium & Giardia – parasites resistant to basic treatment
  • Staphylococcus aureus – causes skin infections and boils

These organisms thrive in warm, untreated spa water, especially if there's no residual sanitiser present.

âś… What You Can Do: Safe, Low-Chemical Spa Options

If you want to reduce chemical usage (not eliminate it), we recommend:

  • Using high-quality, chlorine or biguanide-based systems designed for spas
  • Maintaining pH, alkalinity, and water hardness
  • Using minerals and oxidisers as part of a broader sanitation routine
  • Avoiding misleading products that claim to be “chemical-free”
  • Use Ozone generators, or UV, or even better - us a combo UV + Ozone system.
