This is the current 2024-onwards genuine Balboa M7 3.0kW Plug-N-Click heater assembly, used on Balboa GS, VS, GL, EL, BP and related M7 spa control systems. It is 381mm (15") long, uses 2" heater unions and includes two genuine Balboa M7 temperature sensors.
Most importantly, this heater supersedes and retrofits the older Balboa M7 3.0kW heaters that connected to the circuit board using L-shaped copper lugs, copper straps or copper plates. Choose the Full Retrofit Kit when replacing an older copper-lug heater. Choose Heater Only when a Plug-N-Click adaptor is already fitted.

Quick retrofit check

The Full Retrofit Kit includes the adaptor that replaces the discontinued copper lugs. The old copper lugs are removed and discarded.
Replacing an Older Balboa Heater with Copper Lugs
Older Balboa M7 heaters connected to the circuit board using L-shaped copper lugs, also described as copper straps, copper plates or terminal connectors. Balboa discontinued that connection arrangement and replaced it with the Plug-N-Click system.
The Plug-N-Click adaptor bolts onto the circuit board in place of the old copper lugs. The replacement heater then connects to the adaptor using a plug rather than bolted copper straps.
This allows the current heater to be retrofitted to an older Balboa M7 control system. The required adaptor is included with the Full Retrofit Kit.
Which option do I need?
- L-shaped copper lugs or straps are fitted at the circuit board: choose the Full Retrofit Kit. It includes the Plug-N-Click adaptor that replaces the copper lugs.
- A Plug-N-Click adaptor is already fitted: choose Heater Only. The existing adaptor remains in place and the new heater plugs directly into it.
Fitting the adaptor: remove the 3/8" stainless steel nuts from the control board, fit the new ring terminals, refit and correctly tighten the nuts, then connect the loom. The old copper lugs are no longer used.
Balboa M7 Heater Compatibility
This is a 15" x 2" Balboa M7 twin-sensor heater. It suits Balboa control systems using a 2" flow-through heater with two M7 temperature sensors, one at each end of the heater tube. It does not suit older non-M7 systems that use a pressure switch.

Balboa Error Codes Related to the Heater and M7 Sensors
The heater assembly, M7 sensors or water flow through the heater may be involved when the spa displays one of the following error codes:
- SnA / SA: the sensor connected to jack A is not operating and spa functions are disabled
- Snb / Sb: the sensor connected to jack B is not operating and spa functions are disabled
- SnS / Sn: the two M7 sensors are out of balance
- HFL / HL: a substantial temperature difference has been detected between the two sensors, commonly due to inadequate water flow
- LF: verified low flow. This is generally displayed after HFL occurs five times within 24 hours, after which heating is disabled
- OHH / HH: heater over-temperature. One sensor has detected excessive temperature at the heater tube
- dr / dry: dry heater or insufficient water flow has been detected
A sensor fault does not automatically mean the complete heater assembly has failed. Replacement Balboa M7 sensors are available separately here.
HFL, HL, LF, dr and dry codes are often caused by low water level, a blocked suction, a dirty filter, a closed valve, air trapped in the plumbing or an unprimed circulation pump. Check these conditions before ordering a replacement heater.
Installation Requirements
- All electrical terminals must be correctly tightened. Loose electrical connections generate heat and can damage the heater terminals, loom or circuit board. Damage caused by loose terminals is not covered by warranty.
- Do not remove, shorten or modify the Plug-N-Click loom. A modified loom can cause faults and may void warranty coverage.
- Replace the heater union gaskets whenever the heater tube is removed. New 74mm "50mm" heater union gaskets are included with both options.
- Do not over-tighten the heater union nuts. The seal is made by the raised rib on the gasket. Tighten by hand, then approximately one-quarter turn further where required.
- Professional installation is recommended. Electrical work must be completed by an appropriately licensed electrician where required. A qualified spa technician should be used when the installer is not competent to identify the control pack, heater connection and plumbing requirements.

Why Use a Genuine Balboa M7 Heater?
This is a genuine Balboa heater assembly supplied by an authorised Balboa dealer and warranty agent. Some online listings use photographs of genuine Balboa heaters but supply an unbranded or non-genuine substitute.
The differences are functional, not merely cosmetic:
- Incoloy 800 element: genuine Balboa heaters use an Incoloy 800 element selected for resistance to corrosion and chloride stress-corrosion cracking in heated spa water. Lower-grade substitute alloys can pit, perforate and eventually create earth leakage that trips the RCD.
- Element support: Balboa uses titanium stabilisers and a structural damming holder to centre and support the element inside the tube. An inadequately supported element can vibrate, work-harden and crack at stress points.
- Tube and union weld quality: the weld between the heater tube and union flange is a critical potential leak point. Genuine Balboa tubes are consistently welded and pressure-checked. We see non-genuine copies begin weeping at the union within the first two seasons, which can then corrode the heater terminals and the circuit board beneath the heater.
- Genuine M7 sensors: M7 is a patented Balboa system. Its sensors are safety devices that help prevent the element from dry-firing. A dry fire can burn part of the element to molten metal. Even an air bubble contacting a sensor can locally overheat and weaken the element sheath, leading to failure weeks or months later. Correct sensor calibration is essential to detecting temperature imbalance, insufficient flow and dry-heater conditions.
- Correct heater output: the genuine assembly is manufactured to provide the specified 3.0kW output. We frequently find copies sold as 3.0kW do not produce the claimed output. The spa may then struggle to reach or maintain its set temperature in cold conditions, with the pump often incorrectly blamed.
- Warranty support: a non-genuine heater generally has no recognised manufacturer or authorised dealer warranty path. The initial saving is lost as soon as the part fails or damages associated equipment.

What is the difference between Balboa 58107 and 58118?
Both are 3.0kW M7 heater assemblies. The 58118 is an earlier stud-and-nut version with longer sensor leads and is commonly associated with the older copper-lug connection. The 58107 / 58279 Plug-N-Click heater is the later replacement and can retrofit the older arrangement when used with the correct adaptor.
Do I need the Full Retrofit Kit or Heater Only?
Choose the Full Retrofit Kit when L-shaped copper lugs or straps currently connect the heater to the circuit board. Choose Heater Only when a Plug-N-Click adaptor is already installed.
My spa displays HFL or LF. Do I need a new heater?
Not necessarily. HFL and LF indicate inadequate water flow or an excessive temperature difference between the M7 sensors. Check the water level, filter, suction fittings, isolation valves, pump prime and trapped air before replacing the heater. The M7 system requires approximately 23 GPM through the heater tube.
Do I need the titanium version?
The titanium version is generally selected for aggressive water conditions, including bore water, high sanitiser levels or coastal installations. For normally balanced spa water, the genuine Incoloy 800 version is the standard replacement.
Can I install a 4.0kW or 5.5kW heater to make the spa heat faster?
Only where the control pack, circuit-board configuration, wiring, supply circuit and protective devices are specifically rated for the higher output. Installing a larger heater without the required electrical and control-system capacity creates a fire, equipment-damage and compliance risk.
Are the sensors and gaskets included?
Yes. Both options include the heater assembly, two genuine Balboa M7 sensors, the Plug-N-Click heater lead and heater union gaskets. The Full Retrofit Kit also includes the circuit-board adaptor.
How can I identify a genuine Balboa heater?
Purchase through an authorised Balboa dealer. Genuine assemblies carry Balboa identification and are supplied with the specified Incoloy 800 element and genuine M7 sensors. An unusually low price for a complete heater and two sensors commonly indicates a non-genuine substitute.

In plumbing, named sizes are not the actual measurements. A pipe called “50mm” or “2"” does not measure 50 mm across. Instead, it follows nominal sizing, an internationally-standardised naming system.

Understanding Plumbing Sizes & Nominal Measurements
Plumbing sizes can be confusing. PVC and many other pipe systems use nominal sizes—the size is a name, not the exact measured dimension. This convention is used across most pool and spa systems so that pipes and fittings remain compatible.
Why pipe sizes don’t match the measurements
The Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) system standardises pipe dimensions so that pipes, fittings, valves, and accessories interoperate. Plumbers work with these nominal names every day, but DIYers can be tripped up if they try to match by a tape-measure alone.

- The pipe’s Outside Diameter (OD).
- The fitting’s Inside Diameter (ID) (socket opening).
- Pipe Class / Schedule (e.g., Class 9, 12, 18 or Sch 40) relates to wall thickness and therefore the Internal Diameter (ID) and pressure rating.
