Raypak 280 Premium Gas Pool & Spa Heater — LPG (Propane)
The Raypak 280 Premium is the light commercial version of the 280, producing 58 kW of output from a 261 MJ/h lpg (propane) input. Manufacturer model PC0280A-P. The Premium series adds all-bronze headers for greater temperature tolerance and corrosion resistance, plus a stainless steel base and combustion support — and carries full 3-year parts cover in commercial applications.
- We keep these physically in stock for fast shipping or local pick-up, unlike most drop-shipping websites.
- Shipped Australia-wide
Fuel type: LPG (Propane) — model PC0280A-P
Also available: Raypak 280 Premium — Natural Gas. Domestic install? The Raypak 280 Residential has the same output at a lower price, with ProTek Shield anode protection.

Premium vs Residential — What You Actually Get
- All bronze headers instead of polymer — higher temperature tolerance and better corrosion resistance
- Stainless steel base and combustion support
- 3 years parts cover in commercial use — Residential models are built for single family dwellings, not commercial sites
- Note: ProTek Shield is fitted to Residential models only. The Premium relies on its bronze headers instead.
- Premium models require six-monthly service, not annual

Gas Consumption
| Gas input at full fire | 261 MJ/h |
| Approximate LPG consumption | 5.3 kg/h (10.3 L/h) |
| Run time per 45 kg cylinder | approx. 8 h 33 min at full fire |
Figures are at full fire. The heater only draws this while it is actually calling for heat, so daily usage depends on how far below set point the water sits, the weather, and whether a cover is fitted. LPG conversions use 49.6 MJ/kg and 25.3 MJ/L for propane. A single 45 kg cylinder will not keep this heater running for long — most installations of this size run twin cylinders with an automatic changeover regulator, or a bulk tank.

Important: When Replacing an Existing Raypak Heater
- Raypak heaters no longer have a built-in valve actuator or pump control. If you are operating valve actuators or switching a pump, you will need a control system such as the Aquatek with WiFi.
- Because the heater has no pump control of its own, it cannot run the pump on after the burner shuts down. If your control system has no cool-down mode, fit a run-on timer — see accessories below.
- We do not recommend the newer Raypak 280, 350 and 430 heaters be installed where 40 mm plumbing is used — flow characteristics have changed on the newer models.
- On Premium models the pressure switch is accessed from the return cover, opposite the water connection side — not the in/out cover as on Residential models.
Installation Requirements
- Licensed installation only. Must be installed by a qualified gas fitter who issues a compliance certificate. Installation to AS/NZS 5601.1, AS/NZS 3500.4 and AS/NZS 3000.
- Gas supply — read this. Propane models must run on propane only. Propane/butane mixtures such as automotive LPG are unsafe in this heater and will damage it. Burner pressure must be set to the rating label figure at commissioning — incorrect gas settings are not covered by warranty.
- Outdoor: minimum 1,500 mm from any window or room ventilation opening, no obstructions above, level non-combustible base, not under eaves or pool decks.
- Indoor: requires the indoor hood conversion kit and compliant 200 mm flueing. Minimum clearances on non-combustible surfaces — rear 150 mm, front 750 mm, water side 600 mm, non-water side 150 mm, above 1,200 mm. On combustible surfaces, rear and non-water side increase to 500 mm.
- High wind areas: a High Wind Top or induced draft fan may be needed. In constant high wind, site the heater at least 1 m from high vertical walls.
- Flow switch: required if heater pipework sits more than 1,500 mm above or below pool water level (Raypak part AQ0200201).
- Chlorinators and dosing systems must feed downstream of the heater with an anti-siphon device fitted. Chemicals entering the heater directly will destroy the heat exchanger and void warranty.
- Commercial sites: Rheem recommends building redundancy into the heating system so the pool stays in service if one heater goes down.
Water Balance — Warranty Critical
Incorrect water balance is the single most common cause of heat exchanger failure, and corrosive water voids the Rheem warranty. Target ranges:
| Fibreglass pools, under 31 °C | Fibreglass spas, over 31 °C | Other pools & spas | |
| pH | 7.3 – 7.4 | 7.3 – 7.4 | 7.6 – 7.8 |
| Total alkalinity (ppm) | 120 – 150 | 120 – 150 | 80 – 120 |
| Calcium hardness (ppm) | 200 – 300 | 200 – 300 | 200 – 400 |
| Salt (ppm) | 6,000 max | 6,000 max | 6,000 max |
| Free chlorine (ppm) | 2 – 3 | 2 – 3 | 2 – 3 |
| Langelier Saturation Index | ±0.3 | ±0.3 | ±0.3 |
Free chlorine must not exceed 4 ppm. Free bromine must not exceed 5 ppm. Never add acid to the skimmer box — add small amounts spread across the pool surface.
Controller Service Codes
- PO — no mains power to the unit
- O — insufficient water pressure, pump not running or pressure switch needs adjustment
- F1 — wiring or electronics fault
- F2 — main sensor open circuit
- F3 — main sensor short circuit
- F4 — secondary sensor short circuit
The heater also locks out on over-temperature if inlet water exceeds 45 °C. It must cool to roughly 35 °C before the red reset button will illuminate and reset — allow up to 4 hours.
Warranty
- Commercial application or single family dwelling: 3 years parts, 1 year labour.
- Warranty does not cover incorrect gas settings, corrosive water, chemical damage, or installation by an unqualified person.
- Premium models require six-monthly service by a qualified technician as a condition of warranty.
Manuals & Documentation
- Owner’s Guide & Installation Instructions — full 32-page manual covering installation, commissioning, controller programming, wiring diagrams and dimensional data
- Residential & Premium Range Brochure — model comparison, sizing guide and accessories
- Raypak spare parts with exploded diagrams — every serviceable part for the 200/280/350/430, with diagrams to identify what you need. We stock more Raypak gas heater spare parts than anyone in Australia.
Accessories & Options
- Indoor installation: Raypak 280 indoor draft diverter / draught stack — required to convert this heater from its standard outdoor configuration to indoor. A Raypak heater must never be run indoors in outdoor configuration.
- High wind locations: Raypak 280 High Wind Top — these heaters are atmospherically vented, so gusty or exposed sites can upset combustion. The high wind top restores proper draw through the heater.
- Recommended — run-on / cool-down: Dontek H5RO gas heater run-on controller — we recommend one on any gas heater where the control system in place has no cool-down mode. It holds the filtration pump on after the burner shuts down so residual heat is carried out of the heat exchanger rather than left sitting in it.
- In-house remote control — surface or flush mounted, 10 m, 20 m or 50 m cable
- Raypak 200/280/350/430 spare parts and exploded diagrams
