This is the genuine Astralpool impeller, part number 40060X, for the Viron XT P320 variable speed pool pump. It is approximately 133mm in diameter with a vane width of about 8.8mm. The same part number covers every generation of the XT P320 from the original release through to the current P320 C XT. It is not the impeller for the Viron eVo P320, and it is not the P520 impeller.

The Viron XT Impeller Rule (rev. VIR-2.1)

Almost every wrong impeller sent for this pump comes from ordering by the number on the pump rather than the letters after it. Several pumps carry "P320" on the badge and they do not share an impeller. Work through these four steps in order and finish on a measurement:

1. Read the full model line on the pump badge, not just the number. You are looking for the letters immediately after the number: XT, eVo, or C XT.
2. If the badge says eVo, stop here. The eVo P320 uses the 11.5mm moulded small impeller shared with the CX320 / P280 / FX290 / CTX360 family — that is part 40060F, not this one.
3. If the badge says XT or C XT, continue — the year does not matter. Isolate power, open the wet end, remove the impeller retaining bolt and withdraw the impeller.
4. Measure the outside diameter of the old impeller across the widest point, and the width of the vane opening at the outer edge. The 40060X measures approximately 133mm across and 8.8mm at the vane. If the vane measures nearer 11.5mm you have the eVo-family impeller; if the whole impeller is noticeably larger, you have the P520.

Worked Example

A Viron XT P320 fitted to a 48,000 litre pool at Carrum Downs in 2017 had lost roughly a third of its flow at full speed, though the motor still ran quietly and the basket and lid o-ring were clean. Stripping the wet end showed the impeller intact but with two vane tips worn back and a fine scoring ring where sand had passed through a failed multiport spider gasket. The old part measured 132.6mm across and 8.7mm at the vane opening — within tolerance of the 40060X figures — so the P320 impeller was the correct replacement, not the P520 and not the eVo part. A new mechanical seal went in at the same time, because the old seal faces had already been disturbed on removal.

Which Impeller Do I Need?

Astralpool revised the Viron XT several times without ever changing the P320 impeller part number. If your pump is badged XT, the 40060X is correct regardless of its age or which of the revisions below it belongs to:

• Viron P320 XT — original XT release, including all early-production units.
• Viron P320 XT, pre-July 2018 wet end — wet end 40097, seal plate 40098, mechanical seal 75508. Impeller unchanged.
• Viron P320 XT, July 2018 onwards wet end — revised wet end 40031 and seal plate 40030, mechanical seal 75509. Impeller unchanged.
• Viron XT Series 2 / XT MkII P320 — revised controller and housing. Impeller unchanged.
• Viron XT P320C (Nov 2020 – June 2021) — impeller unchanged.
• Viron XT P320C (July 2021 onwards) — impeller unchanged.
• Viron P320 C XT — the current model, which supersedes the earlier P320 XT variants. Impeller unchanged.

In short: the wet end, seal plate and mechanical seal were all revised over the life of the XT P320, but the impeller has stayed 40060X throughout. If you are ordering other parts at the same time, those are era-dependent and you will need to identify your pump's build date.

What This Impeller Does Not Fit

• Viron eVo P320 — despite the identical number on the badge, the eVo is a different pump generation with a different wet end. It takes the 11.5mm impeller shared with the CX320 / P280 / FX290 / CTX360 family: part 40060F.
• Viron XT P520 and P520 C XT — larger hydraulic package, larger impeller. Use 40060Z instead.
• Viron P320 (original, pre-eVo) — carries its own separate parts breakdown. Send us a photo of your pump badge and we will identify it.
• Viron P600 and CTX400 series — different wet end and different part number entirely. Contact us with your model details.
• Hurlcon BX, TX and E-series pumps — pre-Viron wet ends, sized by motor. The 1.0HP versions take 40060F.

Measurements & Fitting

• Outside diameter: approximately 133mm
• Vane width at outer edge: approximately 8.8mm
• Retained by impeller retaining bolt 78187 with o-ring 78711 — inspect both on removal and replace if the o-ring is flattened or the bolt is corroded
• Matching mechanical seal: 75509 on current and post-2018 pumps, 75508 on the earliest XT builds
• Matching diffuser: 40071A (XT P320). The XT P520 takes 40071B — do not mix them

Symptoms of a Failed or Worn Impeller

• Motor runs at normal speed and normal noise, but flow and filter pressure are both down
• Pump takes far longer to prime, or will not hold prime, with no air leak found on the suction side
• Grinding, rattling or a rhythmic knock from the wet end
• Pump humming but not turning — debris jammed in the impeller is a listed cause in the Astralpool troubleshooting guide, often after the hair and lint basket has split and allowed debris through
• Controller showing the HI A over-current fault — Astralpool lists "wrong impeller fitted" as one of the causes, which is exactly what happens when a P520 impeller ends up on a P320
• Visible debris packed into the vane passages, or vane tips worn back and rounded
• Cracked or spun hub after the pump has run dry

When to Replace

Replace the impeller when the vanes are worn, chipped or cracked, when the hub has spun, or when the pump has run dry and the plastic has distorted. Blocked vanes can often be cleared rather than replaced — check that first. Because the mechanical seal is disturbed whenever the impeller comes off, we recommend fitting a new mechanical seal at the same time rather than reusing a seal whose faces have been separated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 40060X fit a Viron eVo P320?
No. The eVo P320 is a different pump generation and uses part 40060F, the 11.5mm impeller shared with the CX320, P280, CTX360 and FX290 pumps. Only the XT and C XT versions of the P320 take the 40060X.

Does this fit older Viron XT P320 pumps?
Yes. The impeller part number has never changed across the life of the XT P320. It covers the original XT, the pre-2018 and post-2018 wet end revisions, the XT Series 2, the P320C and the current P320 C XT.

What is the difference between 40060X and 40060Z?
40060X is the P320 impeller and 40060Z is the P520 impeller. The P520 impeller is physically larger because the P520 is a higher flow pump. They are not interchangeable.

How is the impeller held on?
The Viron XT impeller is secured by a retaining bolt, part 78187, with an o-ring, part 78711. Remove the bolt before attempting to withdraw the impeller, and inspect the o-ring while it is apart.

Do I need a new mechanical seal when I replace the impeller?
We recommend it. The mechanical seal is split apart as soon as the impeller comes off, and reused seal faces are the most common cause of a leak after an impeller change.

My pump runs but flow has dropped — is the impeller the cause?
Possibly, but check the easy items first: skimmer and pump baskets, lid o-ring, suction blockages and a dirty filter. If those are clear and the motor is running at full speed, a worn or blocked impeller is the next thing to inspect.

My controller is showing HI A — can the impeller cause that?
Yes. Astralpool lists a wrong impeller being fitted as one of the causes of the HI A over-current fault, along with worn bearings or seal. If someone has previously fitted a P520 impeller to a P320, this is a common result.
