Complete Cell or Electrode Only? (rule CELL-1.0)
The electrode is the plate stack that wears out. The housing is the clear barrel it sits inside. The housing does not wear, it fails. Decide by inspection:
- Unscrew the cell nut and withdraw the electrode. Look at the plates. Flaking, bare grey titanium, or heavy pitting means the electrode is finished.
- Hold the empty housing up to the light. If it is clear, uncracked, not crazed and the sealing faces are smooth, keep it — order the electrode only, 12916.
- If the housing is cracked, crazed, milky, brittle or weeping at the unions, order the complete cell, 12906. A cracked housing will not seal against a new electrode.
Replace the cell o-ring either way. It is a few dollars and it is the usual cause of a leak after a cell change.
Specifications
- Complete cell: 12906
- Electrode only: 12916
- Plates: 11 solid plates
- Output: 25 g/hr
- Type: Self-cleaning, reverse-polarity
- Brand: Astralpool, a Fluidra brand
Chlorine output is set by the chlorinator's power supply, not by the electrode alone. The same cell can produce a different gram-per-hour figure in different models, which is why published output figures for these parts vary between sellers. Match on chlorinator model, not on a gram rating.
Warranty — 3 Years
Per the current Astralpool express warranty schedule, effective 1 February 2026, this cell is covered for 3 years in a residential single-dwelling pool. Cover is conditional — the conditions below are the ones that actually catch people out.
Warranty Conditions Worth Knowing
- It must be bought from a Fluidra Authorised Dealer. Astralpool's express warranty only applies to product purchased from an authorised dealer. We are one. A cell bought from an unauthorised online seller may not be covered at all.
- Cover starts 30 days after the date of purchase to allow for installation.
- Residential single-dwelling pools. Cells used at hotels, swim schools, rehabilitation centres, apartment or townhouse complexes and other multi-dwelling or commercial sites are covered for 1 year.
- Water chemistry is a condition. Cover assumes water balanced to AS 3633, pH held between 7.2 and 7.8, and free chlorine not exceeding 4ppm. Damage from scaling or corrosion caused by out-of-balance water is excluded. Keep your test results.
- Register the product with myFluidra using the serial number and proof of purchase.
Full details on our warranty information page.
Why the Warranty Is Better Here
- We are an authorised Astralpool and Fluidra dealer and warranty agent, so buying from us satisfies the authorised-dealer condition on its own.
- Claims are assessed and handled by us in-house, not bounced to a supplier who bounces you to the manufacturer.
- Our team includes ex-Astralpool and ex-Hurlcon technicians who built and serviced this equipment.
Genuine Only — And Why That Matters
The replacement cell market is full of aftermarket, generic and copy electrodes, often listed so they look like the real thing. Non-genuine cells typically use a lighter titanium substrate and a lower-grade mixed-metal-oxide coating, which wears through early and drops chlorine output well before the promised life. Fitting a non-genuine part can also affect cover on the chlorinator itself. If a genuine cell is advertised well below the going rate, it is worth asking what is actually being sent.

- 70570 — external clear cell body, if you need the housing on its own. Check the fitment list on that page against your model (buy here)

When to Replace
Replace the electrode when the chlorinator reports low output or a low-salt fault that persists after the salt level is confirmed correct, when the plates show bare titanium or flaking coating, or when chlorine production has clearly fallen off with balanced water. Scale on the plates is not failure — a scaled cell often recovers after cleaning. Check for scale before condemning a cell, particularly in hard-water areas.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between 12906 and 12916?
12906 is the complete cell — electrode plus housing. 12916 is the electrode only, with no housing. If your existing housing is sound, 12916 is all you need.
Does the Viron V25 cell fit an eQuilibrium EQ25 or a Halo 25?
Yes. The Viron V25, Viron eQuilibrium EQ25 and Halo 25 all use the same cell.
How many plates does this cell have?
11 solid plates. It is a self-cleaning reverse-polarity cell rated at 25 grams per hour.
Will a VX series cell fit my Viron or Halo?
No. The VX and E-Series chlorinators use the 219xx cell range. Viron, eQuilibrium and Halo use the 129xx range. They are not interchangeable.
My cell arrived with a grey surround, not clear. Is it genuine?
Yes. Astralpool changed the surround and genuine cells now ship in either black or grey.

To the layperson, plumbing sizes and their names can be confusing due to the nominal sizes and naming conventions used.
This is not something we made up. Plumbers and manufacturers have used nominal (meaning ‘by name only’) sizing for decades.
Simply put, in plumbing, named sizes are often not the actual measurements of the pipe, fitting, or part. A PVC pipe called “50mm” or “2"” does not measure 50 mm anywhere. Instead, it follows nominal sizing, an internationally-standardised naming system.
Almost all fittings we use in the pool & spa industry use “pressure PVC” pipe & fittings. Do not confuse with “DWV” or other pipe & fittings and their names and sizes.
Use the Outside Diameter (OD) to check your pipe against fittings. Below is a quick reference for common spa & pool pipe sizes:
| Imperial Name | Metric Name | Pipe Diameter (OD) |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2" | 15mm | ~21.2–21.5 mm |
| 3/4" | 20mm | ~26.6–26.9 mm |
| 1" | 25 mm | ~33.4–33.7 mm |
| 1.5" | 40 mm | ~48.1–48.4 mm |
| 2" | 50 mm | ~60.2–60.8 mm |
| 2.5" | 65 mm | ~75.2–75.5 mm |
To reiterate, these are nominal sizes and are designed to fit matching fittings — not to measure what their name suggests. These are based on PVC Pressure Pipe AS/NZ 1477 Dimensions1.
- º Internal diameters vary slightly by manufacturer and class.
- 1 Not all pool/spa fittings match these dimensions exactly. Some do not follow Australian or international standards. Chinese spas may use proprietary fittings.
Understanding Plumbing Sizes & Nominal Measurements
Plumbing sizes can be confusing. PVC and many other pipe systems use nominal sizes—the size is a name, not the exact measured dimension. This convention is used across most pool and spa systems and other plumbing areas so that pipes and fittings remain compatible.
Why pipe sizes don’t match the measurements
The Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) system standardises pipe dimensions so that pipes, fittings, valves, and accessories interoperate.
Plumbers work with these nominal names every day, but DIYers can be tripped up if they try to match by a tape-measure alone.
How to Measure Pipe Correctly
-
Pipe size is identified by:
- The pipe’s Outside Diameter (OD).
- The fitting’s Inside Diameter (ID) (socket opening).
- Pipe Class / Schedule (e.g., Class 9, 12, 18 or Sch 40) relates to wall thickness and therefore the Internal Diameter (ID) and pressure rating.
- The outside diameter of a fitting is not useful (wall thickness varies by manufacturer).
Hose & Tube Dimensions
Common flexible hose sizes used in pool/spa systems (approximate IDs).
| Imperial Name | Metric Name | Inside Diameter (ID) |
|---|---|---|
| 3/8" | 9–10 mm | ~9 mm |
| 3/4" | 19 mm | ~19 mm |
BSP – British Standard Pipe Thread Sizes
BSP thread names are also nominal. The thread OD will not equal the nominal name.
| BSP Thread Size Naming | Outside Diameter (mm / inch) | TPI |
|---|---|---|
| 1/16" BSP | 7.7 mm / 0.304" | 28 |
| 1/8" BSP | 9.7 mm / 0.383" | 28 |
| 1/4" BSP | 13.16 mm / 0.518" | 19 |
| 3/8" BSP | 16.66 mm / 0.656" | 19 |
| 1/2" BSP / 15 mm | 20.99 mm / 0.825" | 14 |
| 5/8" BSP | 22.99 mm / 0.902" | 14 |
| 3/4" BSP / 20 mm | 26.44 mm / 1.041" | 14 |
| 7/8" BSP | 30.20 mm / 1.189" | 14 |
| 1" BSP / 25 mm | 33.25 mm / 1.309" | 11 |
| 1-1/4" BSP | 41.91 mm / 1.650" | 11 |
| 1-1/2" BSP / 40 mm | 47.80 mm / 1.882" | 11 |
| 2" BSP / 50 mm | 59.61 mm / 2.347" | 11 |
| 2-1/4" BSP | 65.71 mm / 2.587" | 11 |
| 2-1/2" BSP | 75.18 mm / 2.960" | 11 |
