Flue temps generally should be 140-240°C. The temperature variations can be caused by several factors.
If you replace the SFS and it fails again within a year, the heater likely has an overheating issue, sooted heat exchanger, other issue, which is not a fault of the sensor, but a side effect of an issue with the heater.
The sensor itself is very robust and rarely dies for no reason.

Diagnostic LEDs / Error Messages & Causes:
- PS - Check / Replace Pressure Switch. Signifies flow issues.
- HLS - Check / Replace High-Limit Switch/es (faults above 45°C or 55°C) Signifies flow, bypass, governer issues, or other issues.
- AFS - Check / Replace Air Flow Switch. Signifies fan, air flow, or other issues.
- AGS - Check / Replace AGS Automatic Gas Shutoff Switch/es (faults above 60°C). Signifies flow, bypass, governer issues, or other issues. Can also be caused by a 45° Limit Switch on top of the manifold.
- SFS - Check / Replace SFS Stack Flue Sensor (faults above 249°C). High or Low Flue Temperatures are a sign of significant combustion issues, or other issues.
- E01 - Thermistor Fault. Replace Thermistor.
- E05 - General Fault. Needs service. This can be caused by several issues.
- Showing Incorrect Temperature - Replace Thermistor. Check all filters clean. If thermistor shows corrosion, water balance is poor.

These are nominal sizes and are designed to fit matching fittings — not to measure exactly what their name suggests.
Understanding Plumbing Sizes & Nominal Measurements
Plumbing sizes can be confusing. PVC and many other pipe systems use nominal sizes—the size is a name, not the exact measured dimension. This convention is used across most pool and spa systems so that pipes and fittings remain compatible.
Why pipe sizes don’t match the measurements
The Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) system standardises pipe dimensions so that pipes, fittings, valves, and accessories interoperate. Plumbers work with these nominal names every day, but DIYers can be tripped up if they try to match by a tape-measure alone.
How to Measure Pipe Correctly

Pipe size is identified by:
- The pipe’s Outside Diameter (OD).
- The fitting’s Inside Diameter (ID) (socket opening).
- Pipe Class / Schedule (e.g., Class 9, 12, 18 or Sch 40) relates to wall thickness and therefore the Internal Diameter (ID) and pressure rating.
- The outside diameter of a fitting is not useful (wall thickness varies by manufacturer).
