Electrode Only — Check Your Housing First (rule CELL-1.0)
This part is the electrode: the plate stack that wears out. The housing is the clear barrel it sits inside. The housing does not wear, it fails — so inspect it before you order:
- Withdraw the electrode from the housing. Flaking plates, bare grey titanium or heavy pitting means the electrode is finished.
- Hold the empty housing up to the light. Clear, uncracked, not crazed, smooth sealing faces — keep it, and this electrode is all you need.
- Cracked, crazed, milky, brittle or weeping at the unions — the housing needs replacing too. A damaged housing will not seal against a new electrode. Contact us and we will quote the housing separately.
Replace the o-ring either way. It is a few dollars and it is the usual cause of a leak after a cell change.
Specifications
- Part number: W197431 (TRi Electrode 25 Packed)
- Output: 25 g/hr
- Plates: 11 solid plates
- Type: Reverse-polarity, self-cleaning
- Supplied as: Electrode only — housing not included
- Brand: Zodiac, a Fluidra brand
Chlorine output is set by the chlorinator's power supply, not by the electrode alone. The same cell can produce a different gram-per-hour figure in different models, which is why published output figures for these parts vary between sellers. Match on chlorinator model, not on a gram rating.
Warranty
This cell is covered by the Zodiac express warranty under the current Fluidra warranty schedule. The term depends on the chlorinator it is fitted to and on whether the installation is residential or commercial, so check the current figure on our warranty information page or ask us before you order. Cover is conditional — the conditions below are the ones that actually catch people out.
Warranty Conditions Worth Knowing
- It must be bought from a Fluidra Authorised Dealer. Zodiac's express warranty only applies to product purchased from an authorised dealer. We are one. A cell bought from an unauthorised online seller may not be covered at all.
- Cover starts 30 days after the date of purchase to allow for installation.
- Residential single-dwelling pools. Cells used at hotels, swim schools, rehabilitation centres, apartment or townhouse complexes and other multi-dwelling or commercial sites are covered for a shorter period.
- Water chemistry is a condition. Cover assumes water balanced to AS 3633, pH held between 7.2 and 7.8, and free chlorine not exceeding 4ppm. Damage from scaling or corrosion caused by out-of-balance water is excluded. Keep your test results.
- Register the product with myFluidra using the serial number and proof of purchase.

Why the Warranty Is Better Here
- We are an authorised Zodiac and Fluidra dealer and warranty agent, so buying from us satisfies the authorised-dealer condition on its own.
- Claims are assessed and handled by us in-house, not bounced to a supplier who bounces you to the manufacturer.
- Our team includes ex-Astralpool and ex-Hurlcon technicians who built and serviced this equipment.
Genuine Only — And Why That Matters
The replacement cell market is full of aftermarket, generic and copy electrodes, often listed so they look like the real thing. Non-genuine cells typically use a lighter titanium substrate and a lower-grade mixed-metal-oxide coating, which wears through early and drops chlorine output well before the promised life. Fitting a non-genuine part can also affect cover on the chlorinator itself. If a genuine cell is advertised well below the going rate, it is worth asking what is actually being sent.

When to Replace
Replace the electrode when the chlorinator reports low output or a low-salt fault that persists after the salt level is confirmed correct, when the plates show bare titanium or flaking coating, or when chlorine production has clearly fallen off with balanced water. Scale on the plates is not failure — a scaled cell often recovers after cleaning. Check for scale before condemning a cell, particularly in hard-water areas.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the TRi electrode the same as the eXO and EL cell?
Yes. Zodiac uses the same electrode across the TRi, TRi-XO, eXO iQ and EL ranges. Match on the size — Compact, Mid or Large — not on the chlorinator name.
How do I know whether I have a Compact, Mid or Large?
The size is printed on the label on top of the cell, and the physical length of the electrode differs. If the label is unreadable, send us a photo of the cell and the chlorinator and we will identify it.
Does this come with the housing?
No. This part is the electrode only. The clear cell housing, locking ring and connector cap are separate parts and are not usually replaced at the same time.
Should I replace the o-ring at the same time?
Yes. The electrode o-ring is a few dollars and is the usual cause of a leak after a cell change. R0739000 is supplied as a set of two.

To the layperson, plumbing sizes and their names can be confusing due to the nominal sizes and naming conventions used.
This is not something we made up. Plumbers and manufacturers have used nominal (meaning ‘by name only’) sizing for decades.
Simply put, in plumbing, named sizes are often not the actual measurements of the pipe, fitting, or part. A PVC pipe called “50mm” or “2"” does not measure 50 mm anywhere. Instead, it follows nominal sizing, an internationally-standardised naming system.
Almost all fittings we use in the pool & spa industry use “pressure PVC” pipe & fittings. Do not confuse with “DWV” or other pipe & fittings and their names and sizes.
Use the Outside Diameter (OD) to check your pipe against fittings. Below is a quick reference for common spa & pool pipe sizes:
| Imperial Name | Metric Name | Pipe Diameter (OD) |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2" | 15mm | ~21.2–21.5 mm |
| 3/4" | 20mm | ~26.6–26.9 mm |
| 1" | 25 mm | ~33.4–33.7 mm |
| 1.5" | 40 mm | ~48.1–48.4 mm |
| 2" | 50 mm | ~60.2–60.8 mm |
| 2.5" | 65 mm | ~75.2–75.5 mm |
To reiterate, these are nominal sizes and are designed to fit matching fittings — not to measure what their name suggests. These are based on PVC Pressure Pipe AS/NZ 1477 Dimensions1.
- º Internal diameters vary slightly by manufacturer and class.
- 1 Not all pool/spa fittings match these dimensions exactly. Some do not follow Australian or international standards. Chinese spas may use proprietary fittings.
Understanding Plumbing Sizes & Nominal Measurements
Plumbing sizes can be confusing. PVC and many other pipe systems use nominal sizes—the size is a name, not the exact measured dimension. This convention is used across most pool and spa systems and other plumbing areas so that pipes and fittings remain compatible.
Why pipe sizes don’t match the measurements
The Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) system standardises pipe dimensions so that pipes, fittings, valves, and accessories interoperate.
Plumbers work with these nominal names every day, but DIYers can be tripped up if they try to match by a tape-measure alone.
How to Measure Pipe Correctly
-
Pipe size is identified by:
- The pipe’s Outside Diameter (OD).
- The fitting’s Inside Diameter (ID) (socket opening).
- Pipe Class / Schedule (e.g., Class 9, 12, 18 or Sch 40) relates to wall thickness and therefore the Internal Diameter (ID) and pressure rating.
- The outside diameter of a fitting is not useful (wall thickness varies by manufacturer).
Hose & Tube Dimensions
Common flexible hose sizes used in pool/spa systems (approximate IDs).
| Imperial Name | Metric Name | Inside Diameter (ID) |
|---|---|---|
| 3/8" | 9–10 mm | ~9 mm |
| 3/4" | 19 mm | ~19 mm |
BSP – British Standard Pipe Thread Sizes
BSP thread names are also nominal. The thread OD will not equal the nominal name.
| BSP Thread Size Naming | Outside Diameter (mm / inch) | TPI |
|---|---|---|
| 1/16" BSP | 7.7 mm / 0.304" | 28 |
| 1/8" BSP | 9.7 mm / 0.383" | 28 |
| 1/4" BSP | 13.16 mm / 0.518" | 19 |
| 3/8" BSP | 16.66 mm / 0.656" | 19 |
| 1/2" BSP / 15 mm | 20.99 mm / 0.825" | 14 |
| 5/8" BSP | 22.99 mm / 0.902" | 14 |
| 3/4" BSP / 20 mm | 26.44 mm / 1.041" | 14 |
| 7/8" BSP | 30.20 mm / 1.189" | 14 |
| 1" BSP / 25 mm | 33.25 mm / 1.309" | 11 |
| 1-1/4" BSP | 41.91 mm / 1.650" | 11 |
| 1-1/2" BSP / 40 mm | 47.80 mm / 1.882" | 11 |
| 2" BSP / 50 mm | 59.61 mm / 2.347" | 11 |
| 2-1/4" BSP | 65.71 mm / 2.587" | 11 |
| 2-1/2" BSP | 75.18 mm / 2.960" | 11 |
| 3" BSP | 87.88 mm / 3.460" | 11 |
| 4" BSP | 113.03 mm / 4.450" | 11 |
| 5" BSP | 138.43 mm / 5.450" | 11 |
