Astralpool Impeller Viron XT P520 40060Z

This is the genuine Astralpool impeller, part number 40060Z, for the Viron XT P520 variable speed pool pump. The same part number covers every generation of the XT P520 from the original release through to the current P520 C XT. It is visibly larger than the P320 impeller and the two are not interchangeable. It is also not the impeller for the Viron eVo range.

  • Physically Stocked, unlike most "drop-shipping" websites.
  • Shipped from VIC, NSW, WA, QLD

The Viron XT Impeller Rule (rev. VIR-2.0)

Almost every wrong impeller sent for these pumps comes from ordering by the number on the pump rather than the letters after it, or from assuming a P320 and P520 share parts. They do not. Work through these four steps in order and finish on a measurement:

  1. Read the full model line on the pump badge, not just the number. You are looking for the letters immediately after the number: XT, eVo, or C XT.
  2. If the badge says eVo, stop here. The eVo range uses the older CX / P280 / FX family impeller and this part will not fit it.
  3. If the badge says XT or C XT, continue — the year does not matter. Isolate power, open the wet end, remove the impeller retaining bolt and withdraw the impeller.
  4. Measure the outside diameter across the widest point and the vane width at the outer edge. If it measures approximately 133mm across and 8.8mm at the vane, you have the smaller P320 impeller and you need 40060X instead. The P520 impeller is noticeably larger than that.

Worked Example

A Viron XT P520 running a 96,000 litre pool with an in-floor cleaning system had been losing pressure at the floor heads for two seasons, and the previous service had already replaced the mechanical seal without improvement. On strip-down the impeller was found to be a P320 unit — fitted years earlier by someone who had ordered by the badge number alone. The pump had been running at roughly two-thirds of its intended flow ever since, and the controller had thrown intermittent over-current faults. Fitting the correct 40060Z restored full head at the floor heads on medium speed.

Which Impeller Do I Need?

If your pump badge reads And the old impeller measures You need
Viron XT P520, XT Series 2 P520, P520 C XT noticeably larger than 133mm 40060Z — this product
Viron XT P320, XT Series 2 P320, P320 C XT approx. 133mm dia, 8.8mm vane Impeller Viron XT P320 — 40060X
Viron eVo, CX320, P280, FX290 different hub and vane profile Hurlcon / Astralpool BX / TX impeller range

Every Model and Generation This Impeller Fits

Astralpool revised the Viron XT several times without ever changing the P520 impeller part number. If your pump is badged XT, the 40060Z is correct regardless of its age or which of the revisions below it belongs to:

  • Viron P520 XT — original XT release, including all early-production units.
  • Viron P520 XT, pre-July 2018 wet end — wet end 40097, seal plate 40098, mechanical seal 75508. Impeller unchanged.
  • Viron P520 XT, July 2018 onwards wet end — revised wet end 40031 and seal plate 40030, mechanical seal 75509. Impeller unchanged.
  • Viron XT Series 2 / XT MkII P520 — revised controller and housing. Impeller unchanged.
  • Viron XT P520C (Nov 2020 – June 2021) — impeller unchanged.
  • Viron XT P520C (July 2021 onwards) — impeller unchanged.
  • Viron P520 C XT — the current model, which supersedes the earlier P520 XT variants. Impeller unchanged.

In short: the wet end, seal plate and mechanical seal were all revised over the life of the XT P520, but the impeller has stayed 40060Z throughout. If you are ordering other parts at the same time, those are era-dependent and you will need to identify your pump's build date.

What This Impeller Does Not Fit

  • Viron XT P320 and P320 C XT — smaller hydraulic package, smaller impeller. Fitting a P520 impeller to a P320 overloads the motor and is a listed cause of the HI A over-current fault. Use 40060X instead.
  • Viron eVo range — a different pump generation with a different wet end, sharing its impeller with the CX320 / P280 / FX290 family. Start with the Hurlcon / Astralpool impeller range.
  • Viron P520 (original, pre-eVo) — carries its own separate parts breakdown and a different impeller. Send us a photo of your pump badge and we will identify it.
  • Viron P600 and CTX series — different wet end and different part number entirely. Contact us with your model details.
  • Hurlcon BX, TX, E-series and older CTX pumps — pre-Viron wet ends. See the BX / TX impeller range.

Host Pump Specifications

  • Viron P520 XT motor output: 1.5 kW, 240V 50Hz, 6.0 amp, maximum 2820 rpm
  • Flow rates: 520 lpm high (2850 rpm), 426 lpm medium (2000 rpm), 200 lpm low (1125 rpm)
  • For comparison, the P320 XT is 0.75 kW / 4.1 amp and 320 lpm on high — which is why the impellers differ

Fitting Notes

  • Retained by impeller retaining bolt 78187 with o-ring 78711 — inspect both on removal and replace if the o-ring is flattened or the bolt is corroded
  • Matching mechanical seal: 75509 on current and post-2018 pumps, 75508 on the earliest XT builds
  • Matching diffuser: 40071B (XT P520). The XT P320 takes 40071A — do not mix them

Symptoms of a Failed or Worn Impeller

  • Motor runs at normal speed and normal noise, but flow and filter pressure are both down
  • In-floor cleaning heads or spa jets no longer reaching pressure at the speed they used to
  • Pump takes far longer to prime, or will not hold prime, with no air leak found on the suction side
  • Grinding, rattling or a rhythmic knock from the wet end
  • Pump humming but not turning — debris jammed in the impeller is a listed cause in the Astralpool troubleshooting guide, often after the hair and lint basket has split and allowed debris through
  • Controller showing the HI A over-current fault — Astralpool lists "wrong impeller fitted" as one of the causes
  • Visible debris packed into the vane passages, or vane tips worn back and rounded
  • Cracked or spun hub after the pump has run dry

When to Replace

Replace the impeller when the vanes are worn, chipped or cracked, when the hub has spun, or when the pump has run dry and the plastic has distorted. Blocked vanes can often be cleared rather than replaced — check that first. Because the mechanical seal is disturbed whenever the impeller comes off, we recommend fitting a new mechanical seal at the same time rather than reusing a seal whose faces have been separated.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 40060Z and 40060X?
40060Z is the P520 impeller and 40060X is the P320 impeller. The P520 impeller is physically larger because the P520 is a higher flow pump, running a 1.5 kW motor against the P320's 0.75 kW. They are not interchangeable.

Does this fit older Viron XT P520 pumps?
Yes. The impeller part number has never changed across the life of the XT P520. It covers the original XT, the pre-2018 and post-2018 wet end revisions, the XT Series 2, the P520C and the current P520 C XT.

Can I fit a P520 impeller to a P320 to get more flow?
No. The P320 motor is half the output of the P520 and will draw excessive current trying to turn the larger impeller. Astralpool lists a wrong impeller being fitted as a cause of the HI A over-current fault.

Does the 40060Z fit a Viron eVo?
No. The eVo is a different pump generation and uses the impeller shared with the CX320, P280 and FX290 pumps. Only the XT and C XT versions of the P520 take the 40060Z.

How is the impeller held on?
The Viron XT impeller is secured by a retaining bolt, part 78187, with an o-ring, part 78711. Remove the bolt before attempting to withdraw the impeller, and inspect the o-ring while it is apart.

Do I need a new mechanical seal when I replace the impeller?
We recommend it. The mechanical seal is split apart as soon as the impeller comes off, and reused seal faces are the most common cause of a leak after an impeller change.

My pump runs but flow has dropped — is the impeller the cause?
Possibly, but check the easy items first: skimmer and pump baskets, lid o-ring, suction blockages and a dirty filter. If those are clear and the motor is running at full speed, a worn or blocked impeller is the next thing to inspect.

Is this a genuine Astralpool part?
Yes. We are an authorised Astralpool and Fluidra dealer and warranty agent, and this is the genuine 40060Z impeller.
